December 2019 - Taking on the Tour de Euroglaze

Forget the Tour de France or even the Tour de Yorkshire, the bike ride making all the headlines last month was the Tour de Euroglaze.

Staff, customers and suppliers at the Barnsley based trade fabricator completed a 1600km virtual bike ride covering the equivalent distance from Lands End to John o’Groats. They even added on an extra 100km when they reached the finish line so that they could head to a virtual pub for a well deserved drink! It was all in aid of Retina UK, which Euroglaze has adopted as its chosen charity in its 40th anniversary year and helped to raise around £1500. Taking on the Tour de Euroglaze

The bike was set up in the Euroglaze canteen for the whole of last month, with the staff dividing themselves into evenly matched teams to take part in a series of weekly time, distance and sponsorship challenges to help clock up the miles. The most fiercely fought was the 12km ‘time trial’, with Managing Director Martin Nettleton throwing down the gauntlet with a time of 19.04 only to be beaten by three members of his own team, including the eventual winner Dale Brettoner with a stunning time of 16.10.

Martin was impressed with the enthusiasm and commitment of everyone who took part: “All the staff were keen to get involved – especially once we added in the element of competition! Visitors were invited to take part too and some days the pedals were spinning the whole time.”

Martin Hitchin and Barry Gilligan, the CEO and Sales Director from REHAU, which has been Euroglaze’s systems supplier for 35 years, were amongst the willing volunteers who took to the saddle – each contributing valuable kms towards the eventual total.

Martin Nettleton added: “We’ve set ourselves a target of raising £10,000 for Retina UK which supports people who have the same inherited sight loss as my brother and me, and we’ve made a great start. As people would expect from Euroglaze, it’s a real cooperative team effort and we’re using all our creativity and powers of persuasion to come up with new fundraising ideas and bring in the much needed sponsorship.”

December 2019 - Fond Farewell to Dorothy

Barnsley based Rehau trade fabricator Euroglaze is losing one of its most familiar faces – and voices - this month when Dorothy Pettit, the company’s credit controller, retires after 30 years with the business. Fond Farewell to Dorothy

Fond Farewell to Dorothy

Defying the ageing process and now approaching her mid 70s, Dorothy has enjoyed her time with the company so much that she has been reluctant to hang up her phone and put away her spreadsheets until now.

She joined Euroglaze at its original home in Dewsbury in 1989 but moved with the company to Barnsley in the early 1990s, initially as an accounts clerk and then later as Finance and Admin Manager. After a spell as PA to Martin Nettleton, Euroglaze’s Managing Director, Dorothy switched to credit control duties many years ago and has kept in touch with dozens of customers over the decades.

Speaking before her retirement, Dorothy explained what she had enjoyed so much about her job: “Euroglaze has always been a family business and, like everyone who works here, I have always felt part of that family. Over my time here, lots of other window companies have come and gone, but the quality and values which make Euroglaze special have remained, even as we have developed and expanded.

“From the days when the accounts were written out in a diary and we had just a few fabricators on the factory floor to where we are now as a multi-million pound business, I’m proud of what we have achieved together over so many years. I’ll be keeping in touch to see how things are going and looking back fondly over what has been a wonderful final chapter in my career.”

Dorothy will be leaving Euroglaze with a rather unusual legacy – a plant, nicknamed ‘the money plant’ which she brought with her from the Dewsbury factory to Barnsley and placed in the company’s reception. Nurtured by Dorothy, it has become almost a symbol of the company’s strength and durability and, like Euroglaze, it has grown considerably over the years. It produced its own healthy offshoot five years ago coinciding with the launch of Euroglaze’s own subsidiary business Ecotec Windows, and the superstitious amongst the team have already spotted new shoots ahead of Euroglaze’s latest new ventures.

Martin Nettleton had plenty of warm words for Dorothy, saying: “She has been a mainstay of Euroglaze through plenty of highs and a few lows as well. I know customers as well as staff and me personally will miss her tremendously but, after 30 years, she has definitely earned a long and relaxing retirement.”

Away from Euroglaze, Dorothy is looking forward to spending more time with her husband Mick and indulging her passion for horses, especially her own beloved horse Magic.

In 2019, Euroglaze is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a fundraising campaign aiming to raise money for Retina UK. More information is here: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/euroglaze-ltd1

November 2019 - New Ordering Option from Euroglaze

Euroglaze, Rehau’s longest serving trade fabricator, is making it even easier for new customers to place online orders by extending its use of First Degree’s Window Designer software. Whereas previously new customers had to wait until they received a dongle key from Euroglaze pre-loaded with all their pricing data to place orders online, they can now simply log on directly to the Euroglaze Window Designer account via the cloud. New Ordering Option from Euroglaze

This, says Euroglaze’s Managing Director Martin Nettleton, is making it easier for new customers to try out the legendary Euroglaze quality and service for themselves with no long term commitment and no cost*.

He explains: “Window Designer is a really user-friendly design and pricing option which we know trade customers really like because it is fast and accurate. For existing customers, we load Window Designer directly on to their servers for them, but for new customers we will just send them a username and password and they can get started with us straightaway using the pricing data which we have stored in the cloud.

“If trade customers like what we do, as we know they will, they can come on board with us and, unlike the previous dongle system, if they have a number of different branches or trade counters, they can even share the login so that branches can quote and set up jobs on our system ready for the head office to place orders online.”

Existing or potential customers who want to do more with Window Designer than just price jobs, or who don’t have the high speed internet access required for the cloud based option, can still request a dongle key from Euroglaze and the Customer Service Team will send one out to them direct.

Euroglaze’s IT Manager Graham Park says that Euroglaze has done extensive testing of the system with trial customers to ensure that it is simple, fast and reliable and gives potential customers access to the complete range of Euroglaze products which includes a vast range of window and door styles in Rehau profile, including new composite doors featuring a Doorco slab.

November 2019 - Unlock Your Potential With Rehau Windows

When it comes to the design, construction, and ongoing maintenance of large, commercial projects, a whole host of considerations need to be made. From the fabric that is key to the building’s look, to the building services that ensure it performs to its full potential, countless factors go into making sure the users of a building are as pleased with its performance as they are with its appearance. Window specification principles and key questions should be considered in order to ensure the window choice reflects the needs of the building and its users.

  • Sound attenuation: can the window help to achieve healthy levels of quiet within the building?
  • Insulation: do the u-values of the window help to ensure maximum retention of heat within the building?
  • Fire safety: will the windows play their part in keeping the building’s occupants safe in the unlikely event of a fire?
  • Aesthetics: how effective are the size and colour of the window in minimising sightlines and making the building attractive to look at from the outside?
  • Sustainable supply: does the windows manufacturer act in an environmentally responsible way that will reflect just as well on you as a specifier?

August 2019 - Euroglaze Targets £10k For Anniversary Charity

As part of its 40th anniversary celebrations, Rehau trade fabricator Euroglaze has chosen Retina UK as its charity partner. The Barnsley based business is planning a whole series of events and challenges for staff and customers over the coming months to raise a target of £10K. Donations are being welcomed at: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/euroglaze-ltd1 August 2019 - Euroglaze Targets £10k For Anniversary Charity

Retina UK is the only UK charity dedicated solely to working for people affected by the inherited sight loss experienced by both the company’s Managing Director Martin Nettleton and his brother Simon. It is therefore close to the hearts of everyone at Euroglaze and there is a huge amount of determination and enthusiasm to raise as much money as possible to help support the charity.

Nicky Park, Euroglaze’s Sales and Customer Service Administrator, who is the driving force behind the fundraising efforts, explained: “We all wanted to do something to mark our 40th anniversary which would involve as many people at Euroglaze as possible and make everyone here proud. Retina UK seemed like the perfect choice and almost as soon as we announced our plan, the fundraising ideas started to flood in!”

Things kick off this month with a fancy-dress fun day at Euroglaze’s HQ featuring a strong man van pull, and continue with an online competition for customers, a virtual cycle ride from Lands End to John o’Groats and everything from obstacle races to cake sales.

Martin Nettleton added: “Retina UK doesn’t just support those affected by inherited sight loss but, just as importantly, it funds cutting-edge research into the conditions which cause it. If we can get to £10K, it will make a real difference to them but hopefully, if we can get our customers involved as well, we can make it even more.”

July 2019 - Big Anniversary For Euroglaze

Barnsley based trade fabricator Euroglaze is celebrating both its 40th anniversary in 2019 and its 35th anniversary as a REHAU customer - setting something of a record in the UK. The company, which is still owned and run by the Nettleton family who founded it back in 1979, is REHAU’s longest running customer, having notched up 35 years of unbroken partnership. July 2019 - Big Anniversary For Euroglaze
July 2019 - Big Anniversary For Euroglaze

Martin Nettleton, who succeeded his father Alan as Managing Director in 1999, says that the strength of Euroglaze remains its distinctive blend of smart and friendly customer service and precision quality products. The company is renowned for the fact that it uses a lean manufacturing model based on advanced Japanese production techniques, and has long prided itself on the fact that it offers a truly comprehensive range of top quality REHAU products - from fire rated windows and vertical sliders to casements and even the brand new REHAU RIO flush sash.

REHAU has been quick to congratulate Euroglaze on its ongoing success. Martin Hitchin, REHAU UK’s CEO, says: “We are delighted to have worked with Euroglaze for over 35 years and to have such a strong partnership with Martin and his team. We really value our business relationship with Euroglaze, and we would like to thank the team for making our partnership such a huge success for both our businesses.”

Euroglaze has adapted constantly over the past 40 years to remain at the very forefront of the PVC-U market in terms of efficiency and service, continually adding new products and new features so that customers simply don’t need to go anywhere else. As well as a market leading three day lead time on standard frames and an online ordering portal for example, it also has a bespoke software system which offers paperless despatch and delivery and tracks everything from the packing of ancillaries to the unloading of vehicles to ensure that every order is received in full.

Martin Nettleton adds: “We can match all of the big super fabricators in terms of range and value, but we can easily top them when it comes to precision quality, efficiency, and customer service. Our systems and processes mean customers can take for granted the fact that their orders will be on time and in full, but they also know that they can just lift the phone at any point and talk directly to me or to any of our experienced customer service team and get a fast and efficient response to any question or query which might arise.” Over recent years, Euroglaze has added other new products to its group portfolio and now offers PVC-U, timber and aluminium composite windows and doors from the likes of Internorm, Rationel and Sunflex from its sister company Ecotec, alongside its well established REHAU product range.

This, Martin says, is part of its future strategy as it adapts to growing demand from customers servicing the premium market. He explains: “We produce around 900 frames a week in PVC-U and that remains the core of our business, but we have successfully diversified more recently and added an extensive range of more specialist products to open up exciting new opportunities for our customers. We’re incredibly proud of our 40 year heritage, but we never want to stand still and we’re constantly looking at how we can improve and develop. That extends from our products to our entire team, and from our factory to our vehicles. We have no ambition to be the biggest fabricator in the UK, but we have always aimed to be the best.”

January 2019 - GGP Magazine Talks To Euroglaze Production Director Glen Park

GGP talks to Glen Park, Production Director at Euroglaze, about his rise from shop floor operative to degree qualified director at a trade fabricator where education and training is key to its success. GGP (Glass & Glazing Products) is at the cutting edge of the window, door and conservatory market, representing the full spectrum of the industry: from installers to fabricators and from systems houses to hardware manufacturers. Combining the industry’s most respected print title with a market leading online offering, Glass & Glazing Products’ mission is to arm its readers with the information they need to enhance their businesses in what is a competitive and challenging market place. GGP Magazine Talks To Euroglaze Production Director Glen Park

GGP: What brought you into the industry?

Like most of us, it was just chance really. Barnsley used to be a town dominated by the mining industry but once that started to decline, jobs were increasingly scarce. Several of my family were getting involved in the window industry and especially in PVC-U fabrication around that time so when the opportunity arose for a new job away from mining, I grabbed at it with both hands and have never looked back.

GGP: Tell me about your journey to becoming Production Director?

It really was a case of starting at the bottom. I was an operative on the shop floor to begin with until Alan Nettleton, the founder of the business and the father of our current MD Martin, spotted that I had drive and a will to be in control. He asked me to become a supervisor and then a manager, but it was only when Martin took over that my real education started. I had two stints at college - the first time to get my Certificate in Management qualification and then to get my BTEC Level 7 Advanced Professional Diploma in management studies. That’s equivalent to a Masters degree and it equipped me with all the knowledge I needed to progress further within the organisation and to layer all the latest theories about manufacturing management onto my practical experience.

GGP: What has been the most valuable part of the training/education you’ve received?

On top of the college education, I’ve also benefited from really valuable in-house training from our consultants Brook Corporate Developments in the principles and application of lean manufacturing, which is at the core of what we do at Euroglaze. That has been invaluable and has given me the tools I need to be able to deliver hands on training and in house development to the rest of the team.

GGP: How are you passing your knowledge on to others within the business?

Most of the well-known lean manufacturing principles such as 5s and 7 tools rely entirely on collaborative working so it has been more about implementing these across the business and getting everyone here on board with those processes and those tools. I do that through one to one, team and management meetings, but also through our quality circles approach which is all about team work.

GGP: How do you think Euroglaze benefits from its culture of training investment?

I’m probably the most obvious example here of someone who has benefited from our policy of education and training but it does extend right across the business encompassing everything from apprenticeship training to leadership development for key employees. A better trained and educated workforce gives us the ability to move the business forward and grow, especially at times of great change in the industry. Without it, businesses can undoubtedly stagnate and fall behind.

GGP: What have been the biggest changes you have seen in fabrication during your time with Euroglaze?

Automation has to be up there generally but, for Euroglaze, it has been all about implementing the lean principles which the car industry learned from the Japanese into our fabrication methodology.

GGP: Looking ahead, what challenges do you think lie ahead for you in this role?

Even without Brexit, uncertainty in the market place is a key factor to consider, but we still do have to look to the future positively and continue to try and steadily grow the business in an efficient and profitable manner. The challenge is to ensure this happens and make sure we are in a good position to withstand any negativity in the market place.

GGP: How do you switch off from work?

Family time is my biggest motivation in life. And I love spending any spare time with my wife and kids. I like to join in with my 8 year old on the trampoline and play football in the park. He definitely keeps me feeling young and active.
